Walls are the interior designer's canvas, therefore we need to know their basic construction.
This is straight forward for a builder but there is a lot to remember for those who don't deal with construction on a daily basis.
Walls sit on top of the foundation and/or sometimes the floor. Walls are used to hold the roof up, keep the weather out, provide security, and internally divide up the space creating rooms.
Some walls are structural and others are not. As a general rule all the exterior walls are structural and load bearing, as for internal walls, that all depends on what is sitting above them, you will need to get an engineer to examine these if you want to remove internal or partition walls.
Typically walls are made up of the following; Bottom plate, Top plate, Studs, Jack studs, Trimmer studs, Dwangs, Lintels and Bracing.
