Dezine Tip of the Day - Find Guidelines for Correct Positioning of Artwork in the Home

The positioning of artwork is often a last minute rush task to finish off a room, but time and consideration should be spent to ensure that balance and interest is created. If artwork is placed incorrectly a mismatch of paintings haphazardly placed can be distressing to the eye and create a sense of disorder upsetting the natural flow through a room. Therefore careful consideration needs to be used when undertaking this task. Place the artwork on the floor and group pieces together to make sure they will look balanced before even thinking about hanging them on the wall. Dezine Tip of the Day

The purchase of furniture is a major expenditure in home decorating, so it is essential to think long term and not be impulsive. (Impulsive = Expensive)

If you want to change your interior it is more economical to change the style of your accessories than large items like a couch. An example, using bright bold upholstery fabric on the sofa may be just what you love now, but next year you probably won't be able to stand the sight of it - a very expensive item to change.

Color Dezine Tip of the Day - Making Decisions on a Color Scheme

Color Dezine Tip of the Day - Making Decisions on a Color Scheme

Sometimes the hardest part of a color scheme is eliminating the samples down to the final combination. Here is a way to visualize your color scheme.
Select from your samples as you would see them finished. For example lay the carpet sample on the floor, hang up the fabric at the window, and have the paint or wallpaper vertically against the wall. It is important to visualize these in 3d and in the correct light and see how
they combine together. This way you will have a better understanding of how the finishes work in the space with the existing light conditions.

Dezine Tip of the Day - Renovating Planning Tip

Are the needs of your children and pets currently catered for?

Home life can be easier if everyone has their own designated space. Play areas can be assigned to the children so your whole house doesn't become the playground and obstacle course.
As for the pets - a catdoor can save you being woken in the middle of the night with meows to get out, and save unnecessary accidents inside.

Just a few simple things to think about when planning or renovating a home.

Dezine Tip of the Day - Curing Clutterbugs

Dezine Tip of the Day - Curing Clutterbugs

Curing the clutterbug!
What is a Clutterbug?
A clutterbug is a compulsive collector (or hoarder) who can't bear to put worthless things in the bin (garbage)or throw anything away that is broken. They feel secure with all their possessions around them, and this means a dusty cluttered home interior. At first glance their rooms look like a garbage pile, but digging deeper they are often well ordered just very busy and crammed full.

How to fix a clutterbug?
Action 1 - pretend you are about to move home. Take everything out of the rooms. (Do this one room at a time or the clutterbug just won't cope!) Give the room a good scrub and clean. The clutterbug won't recognize the room or realize just how big the space is!

Lighting Dezine Tip of the Day - Lighting Considerations

Lighting Considerations

Think about the light in a room before you start planning, visit a few rooms and physically look at the space and see if the lighting works, sit down and try and read, look at the walls, are the paintings highlighted, does the room have movement and focus.
Light in the room requires contrast and/or shadow or else it will become bland. The room will feel flat and lifeless and there will be no focal point and it will not be functional. This applies to your home interiors but in commercial situations lighting is far more complex and often a studio, office or classroom will require a bright overall ambient light for concentrated work.

Color Dezine Tip of the Day - Using Accent Colors

Accent colors are a great way to liven up a room. Often people are too scared to add colors, patterns or textures to a room, but by using them as accents you can gradually layer them around the room until you get the right amount of detail to the space. This can be done by using the most popular accent items, cushions, lampshades, area rugs, curtain tie backs, artwork, or throws.

Dezine Tip of the Day - Door Hardware

Dezine Tip of the Day - Door Hardware

A practical item in interior design, but one often left to chance an allowing the building contractor to specify is door hardware. We are so busy thinking about how the interior will look that we forget that we need to be able to get in and out of the doors and make the space secure. Door stops are specified even less and are a vital part of door hardware as they protect your walls from the door handle bashing through it. A little tip when specifying these is to ensure that the doorstop is long enough to stop the door before the handle reaches the wall!
