Dezine Tip of the Day - Curing Clutterbugs

Dezine Tip of the Day - Curing Clutterbugs

Curing the clutterbug!
What is a Clutterbug?
A clutterbug is a compulsive collector (or hoarder) who can't bear to put worthless things in the bin (garbage)or throw anything away that is broken. They feel secure with all their possessions around them, and this means a dusty cluttered home interior. At first glance their rooms look like a garbage pile, but digging deeper they are often well ordered just very busy and crammed full.

How to fix a clutterbug?
Action 1 - pretend you are about to move home. Take everything out of the rooms. (Do this one room at a time or the clutterbug just won't cope!) Give the room a good scrub and clean. The clutterbug won't recognize the room or realize just how big the space is!

Lighting Dezine Tip of the Day - Lighting Considerations

Lighting Considerations

Think about the light in a room before you start planning, visit a few rooms and physically look at the space and see if the lighting works, sit down and try and read, look at the walls, are the paintings highlighted, does the room have movement and focus.
Light in the room requires contrast and/or shadow or else it will become bland. The room will feel flat and lifeless and there will be no focal point and it will not be functional. This applies to your home interiors but in commercial situations lighting is far more complex and often a studio, office or classroom will require a bright overall ambient light for concentrated work.

Dezine Tip of the Day - Door Hardware

A practical item in interior design, but one often left to chance an allowing the building contractor to specify is door hardware. We are so busy thinking about how the interior will look that we forget that we need to be able to get in and out of the doors and make the space secure. Door stops are specified even less and are a vital part of door hardware as they protect your walls from the door handle bashing through it. A little tip when specifying these is to ensure that the doorstop is long enough to stop the door before the handle reaches the wall!

Color Dezine Tip of the Day - Dividing Areas of a Wall

Color Dezine Tip of the Day

For selecting colors when you are dividing areas of a wall, use the darkest color to the bottom, this will help ground the scheme and not leave it floating. It is also more pleasing on the eye. This works well if you are using a chair rail, paint the darker color below this.

Color Dezine Tip of The Day - The Color White

White is not technically a color, it is a neutral like black and grey, but we often call it a color to make our lives simpler.

White is probably the most used color in home decorating! Most ceilings today are white, a great deal of bathrooms are predominately white, and a good proportion of bathroom and kitchen fittings, fixtures and appliances are white, probably due to the fact that pretty much everything goes with white.

White is very useful color tool when starting out in decorating or design and have a fear for jumping into using bold color. It can be easy to start with white walls and gradually build up color around it in the soft furnishings and artwork, accessories and furniture.
